Interaction Design » Oasis Water Wall
Project Specifications
We propose a water wall installation to artfully increase awareness of water use. This design is in response to the 2009 CHI Student Design Competition, where the designed "object, interface, system, or service intended to support the idea of utilizing or consuming local resources rather than global resources, in a sustainable and environmentally efficient manner."
There are two pieces of information projected onto the water wall:
- Water using tips and/or summary of the water use in relatable terms
- Bar chart representing the water used per day for the last seven days (including the current day)
Form Factor
We played around with multiple art forms as a way to convey information. We looked at purely visual representation, visual and text, movable art, interactive art, static art, and stationary art. Our informal conversation told us that above all, there should be little-to-no maintenance. Also, it shouldn't move, because then it's more likely to break.
This led us to the water wall. It is…
- Stationary
- Easy to maintain
- Provides a smooth surface on which to project water use information
Installation would include a bluetooth water flow meter per each apartment that would send water use information to the projector of the water wall. The projector of the water wall would act as a mini-hub, where it would organize and store the information.
